Marie Blum
May 23, 1926 — April 16, 2024
Marie Amelia Blum, daughter of Frank J. and Estella (Weiland) Heese, was born on May 23, 1926, on her family’s farm southwest of Earling, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, where she remained a lifelong member. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School, graduating with the class of 1944.
On October 17, 1945, Marie was united in marriage to Zeno Blum at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. They were the proud parents of six children. After their marriage, the couple lived on a farm southwest of Buck Grove, Iowa for four years. In 1949, they moved south of Earling to the farm they purchased and lived there until moving to their home in the town of Earling in 1982.
Marie dedicated many wonderful years being a homemaker and raising her family. She spent countless hours tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, and canning her produce. Marie was very active in her church and community. She was a member of Catholic Daughters of America and the Altar Society, and Quilting Club. She was a part of Bunco Club, she worked at Earling Café, and you would also find her volunteering at many community events with the Earling Picnic and Town Team Basketball Tournaments as her favorites.
Marie enjoyed cooking and baking, quilting, needle point, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and crafting. Most of all she loved spending time with her family. Many years she spent taking her kids and grandkids to sporting events and loved watching every moment of them playing their game and growing up. Annual family reunions and cousin visits were always important for Marie to attend and keep up with her extended family.
She passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at Elm Crest Assisted Living in Harlan, Iowa, attaining the age of ninety-seven years, ten months, and twenty-four days. In addition to her parents, Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Zeno; son, Darrell; grandson, Todd; siblings, Margaret Book, Estella Rannells, Theresa Swanson, Francis Heese; Joseph Heese; and infant sister Madonna Heese.
She is survived by her children Nancy Gaul of Harlan, Iowa; Steve (Marcia) Blum of Omaha, Nebraska; Phil (Janet) Blum of Earling, Iowa; Jeff (Judi) Blum of Ames, Iowa; Pat (Denise) Blum of Freeport, Illinois; daughter-in-law Betty Blum of Ankeny, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; sister Leona Sondag of Portsmouth, Iowa; sister-in-law Mary Heese of Earling, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
