Marie Cecele Campbell was born on August 24, 1951 to Russell and Ruth (Eckermann) Barker in Denison, Iowa. She was baptized at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa and later became a member of the United Methodist Church in Harlan. She attended St. Patrick’s Elementary in Missouri Valley before transferring to St. Albert’s Catholic School in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
On February 15, 1970, she was united in marriage to David Campbell. They became parents to their daughter, Melissa.
Marie worked at the Sunnyside Café in Missouri Valley and volunteered in the nursery at the Harlan Methodist Church. She delivered newspapers around Harlan, worked at the Video Place for several years, and cleaned at Farmer’s Mutual Cooperative Telephone Company in Harlan. She also worked at Dollar General, retiring in 2015.
Marie died at her home on Thursday, June 18, 2015 having attained the age of sixty-three years, nine months, and twenty-five days. She was preceded in death by her husband David, father Russell, brother Andrew Barker, grandson Maxwell Pope, father-in-law Kenneth Campbell, sister-in-law Betty Jean Hemminger, and brother-in-law Kenny “KC” Campbell.
She is survived by her daughter Melissa and her husband Butch Pope of Harlan, Iowa; mother Ruth Barker of Missouri Valley, Iowa; three grandchildren: Miranda, Madison, and Mallory; brothers and sisters: Robert Barker and his wife Orene of Bakersfield, California, David Barker and his wife Sue of Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, Clifford Barker and his wife Jackie of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Rebecca and her husband Robert Flint of Woodbine, Iowa, Deborah and her husband Lyle Waterhouse of Missouri Valley, Susan and her husband Roger White of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Pollyanna and her husband Marty Shepard of Blair, Nebraska, Jennifer Moe of Santa Rosa, California, Luke Barker of Ashland, Wisconsin, Patricia and her husband Mike Branstetter of Magnolia, Iowa, and Lori and her husband Scott Martin of Omaha, Nebraska; special friend Michael Gray; mother-in-law Betty Campbell of Harlan; sister-in-law Rev. Judith Piper of Sioux City, Iowa; brothers-in-law John Campbell and his wife Sue of Harlan and Kevin Campbell and his wife Lisa of Des Moines, Iowa; many nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.
