Marie Dorothy Graeve Muenchrath
March 19, 1919 — December 17, 2008
Marie "Dorothy" Muenchrath was born on March 19, 1919, to Peter and Isabel (Wilwerding) Heese in Earling, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph�s Catholic Church in Earling and graduated from St. Joseph�s Catholic School with the Class of 1936.
On April 15, 1941, she was united in marriage to Alfons Graeve. Eight children were born to this union: Richard, Ronald "Fuzz", Joanne, Tom, Wayne, Kaleen, Denny, and Jim. After Alfons died in 1963, Dorothy went to work at St. Joseph�s school and remained there as a cook and bookkeeper for twenty-five years. She made many friends and was loved by many children.
Dorothy was married to Ambrose Muenchrath on March 14, 1991. They lived in Earling until moving to Elm Crest Assisted Living in Harlan in 2004. She loved quilting and made several blankets, towels, and quilts for her family over the years. She also stayed busy baking rolls, lady fingers, and her famous cookie balls for her family and friends. In her spare time she would enjoy playing bingo or reading. She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph�s Catholic Church and the Altar Society and was an active member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Katherine, #266 of Earling, Iowa.
Dorothy died on Wednesday, December 17, 2008, with many loved ones by her side. She had attained the age of eighty-nine years, eight months, and twenty-eight days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Alfons Graeve, and two brothers: Ed and Owen; son-in-law Steve Tierney, and daughter-in-law Jeannine Graeve.
She is survived by her husband Ambrose Muenchrath of Harlan, Iowa; her children: Richard Graeve and his wife Sara of Omaha, Nebraska, Ronald "Fuzz" Graeve and his wife Shirley of Glenwood, Iowa, Joanne and her husband Gary Weis of Omaha, Tom Graeve and his wife Deb of Beaver Lake, Nebraska, Wayne Graeve and his wife Dr. Janet of West Des Moines, Iowa, Kaleen Tierney of Smithville, Missouri, Denny Graeve and his wife Elsa of Omaha, and Jim Graeve and his wife Theresa of Omaha; thirty-four grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers and sisters: Rita Sutherland of Gilmore, Iowa, Bernice and her husband Dick Hearn of Des Moines, Iowa, Isabel and her husband John Klein of Harlan, Iowa, Mildred "Mick" Bieker of Harlan, Helen "Terri" Cochran of Omaha, Sister Liz Heese of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Norma and her husband Jerry Schmitz of Okoboji, Iowa, and Larry Heese and his wife Jeannie of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, December 20, 2008 with Rev. David Muenchrath celebrating and Rev. Tom Coenen concelebrating the 10:30 AM service at St. Joseph�s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Chris Tierney, Samuel Muniz-Aybar, Daniel Frazier, Frank Graeve, Christopher Graeve, Dylan Graeve, Eric Frazier, Alan Weis, Greg Graeve, and Leo Graeve. Casket bearers were Kevin Frazier, Brandon Graeve, Mike Graeve, Steve Graeve, Jimmy Graeve, Curt Graeve, Jeff Weis, and Bryan Weis. Interment was held at St. Joseph�s Cemetery in Earling, Iowa.
