Marie Ann Gubbels was born on March 30, 1913, to Nicholas and Anna (Weihs) Gubbels on a farm near Westphalia, Iowa. She attended school at St. Boniface Catholic School in Westphalia and graduated with the Class of 1932.
After her schooling, she worked as a midwife delivering babies. She also worked as a caregiver and cared for many families in the area.
Marie loved to be out in her garden and tending to her beautiful flowers. She also enjoyed spending time in the kitchen and was a wonderful cook.
Marie loved to help people and spent many hours doing volunteer work. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court of St. Katherine #266 of Earling, Iowa.
In October of 2002, she became a resident of the Little Flower Haven in Earling. It was there that Marie died on December 11, 2007, having attained the age of ninety-four years, eight months, and eleven days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Nicholas Jr. and Harry, and her sisters Edna and Lucille.
Marie is survived by her sisters: Rita Wageman of Omaha, Nebraska, Lorraine Korth of Randolph, Nebraska, Genevieve and her husband Donald Korth of Randolph, Nebraska, and Theresa and her husband John Brinks of Anita, Iowa; her sisters-in-law: Marge Gubbels and Lorena Gubbels, both of Harlan, Iowa; her brother-in-law Norbert Krienert of Osmond, Nebraska; nieces and nephews, other family members, and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, December 15, 2007, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa, with Rev. Tom Coenen officiating the 10:00 AM mass. Honorary casket bearers were Daniel Brinks and Dennis Brinks. Serving as casket bearers were Janelle Hansen, Dean Gubbels, Connie Wostrel, Rick Korth, Gail Brinks, and Jack Korth. Interment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa.
