Marie S. Hansen

Marie S. Hansen, daughter of Laurits and Alma (Petersen) Sorensen was born on November 27, 1911, in Hjallerup, Denmark. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith after her birth in Denmark. At the age of two, Marie and her family sailed to the United States. Her father had tried to sail on the Titanic but it was sold out so they had to take another ship.
She grew to adulthood in the Jacksonville, Iowa, area and attended country school in Center Township. She was confirmed at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville and was later united in marriage there to Raymond Hansen on August 17, 1932. Three children were born to this union: Ronald, Bonnie, and Verner.
After their marriage, Raymond and Marie farmed in the Jacksonville area where Marie remained at home raising her children and tending to her garden. In 1971, they moved off the farm and made their home in Elk Horn, Iowa where they lived until Raymond�s death on January 17, 1985. When her children were older, Marie worked at the Salem Lutheran Home and the Elk Horn Veterinarian office for several years. Marie then moved to Harlan, Iowa, where she became a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church as well as the Immanuel Lutheran Church Women�s Group. Marie was a loving wife and mother who enjoyed her family, especially all of her grandchildren.
She died on Saturday, October 25, 2008, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, having attained the age of ninety-six years, ten months and twenty-eight days. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son Ronald Hansen; grandson Robert Grabill; great grandson Keegan Crawley; brothers Willie and Kenneth Sorensen as well as an infant brother.
Survivors include her daughter Bonnie and her husband Don Grabill of Milford, Iowa; her son Verner Hansen and his wife Joyce of Kimballton, Iowa; her grandchildren: Paul Grabill and his wife Beverly of Harlan, Iowa, Dale Grabill of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Leann and her husband Steve Crawley of San Jose, California, Lisa and her husband Lance Neve of Omaha, Nebraska, Wayne Hansen and his wife Janelle of Elk Horn, Iowa, Kevin Hansen and his wife Joanie of Gretna, Nebraska and Stacey Peterson of Elk Horn; eleven great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; her sister Ethel Christensen of Brayton, Iowa; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
A funeral service was held on Monday, October 27, 2008, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa, with Rev. Tony Ede and Rev. Ron Rasmussen officiating the 2:00 PM service. Casket bearers were Lance Neve, Roger Sorensen, Kevin Hansen, Wayne Hansen, Lyle Petersen, and Paul Grabill. Interment was held in the Jacksonville Cemetery in Jacksonville, Iowa.
