Marie Elizabeth Monahan, daughter of Frank and Mary (Jurgensmier) Miller, was born November 7, 1922 at her parents’ home in Panama, Iowa. She was baptized on November 19, 1922 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. She attended country school until the 8th grade.
On October 5 1943, Marie was united in marriage to Charles Monahan at St. Mary’s of the Assumption in Panama, Iowa. Nine children were born to this union: Darlene, Patrick, Lois, Marilyn, Michael, Donna, Dorothy, Phillip, and Gregory. Marie helped Charles on the farm, she also worked at Western Iowa Pork. She then went to cook at Red’s Café for sometime and then cooked at Baptist Home, where she retired.
Marie enjoyed spending time gardening, embroidering, baking pies, couponing, and coloring in adult coloring books. She would spend time at the senior center playing cards. She learned to drive at the age of 50 and was known to be an awful driver. Marie was a long time member of Catholic Daighters and St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan.
Marie died on December 15, 2017 at Avoca Specialty Care in Avoca, Iowa, attaining the age of ninety-five years, one month, and eight days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Charles Monahan, daughters Lois Monahan, Donna Moore, Dorothy Miller, great-great grandson Jaxson; siblings Helan Monahan, Dorthey Miller, Edward Miller, and Francis Miller.
She has left to cherish her memory, her children Darlene and her husband Chuck Montgomery of Yuba City, California; Patrick Monahan and his with Ruth of Earling, Iowa; Marilyn Ahrens of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Mike Monahan and his wife Barb of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Phil Monahan of Harlan, Iowa; Greg Monahan of Omaha, Nebraska; 19 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sisters Margaret Patten of Omaha, Nebraska; Theresa Kenkel of Missouri Valley, Iowa; nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.
