Marjorie L. Dethmann was born at Denison, Iowa, January 27, 1914, the daughter of Leslie and Selma Hansen Johnston. She was received into God?s Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison November 25, 1916, and confirmed in her Christian Faith there July 31, 1938. She was raised on the farm at Denison where she had fond memories of house parties, dances, programs at school and box socials. She received her early education in the rural schools before being graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1931, having received the Normal Training for her teaching certificate. Following high school she taught for ten years in the rural schools of Crawford County. On January 25, 1941, Marjorie was united in marriage with Roy Claus Johannas Dethmann at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Carol. They made their home near Manilla on the Henry Lochmiller farm before moving to the Buck Grove area residing on the Sewell place. After Roy?s return from World War II they made their home on the Selander farm. In 1956 they moved to Denison where they purchased the La Fonda Motor Court which they operated with Marjorie?s parents for many years. In addition to operating the Motor Court Marjorie was also a Shaklee Distributor and, in later years, was employed at the Denison Head Start. Roy and Marjorie spent their retirement years in Denison where Marjorie was a loving caregiver for her mother in their home for many years. In her spare time she enjoyed dancing, socializing, clipping recipes and many other articles of interest from newspapers and magazines, and she especially loved getting together with her family. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Zion Evening Guild and the American Legion Auxiliary. Roy died September 29, 2002, and Marjorie continued to reside at their home until moving to the Denison Care Center in Denison May 11, 2004. Marjorie died at the Care Center late Thursday, August 16, 2007. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 93 years, 6 months and 19 days. Including her parents and husband, Marjorie was preceded in death by one brother, Marlin Johnston, Sr. and one sister, Garnette Fineran. Those remaining to cherish her memory include one daughter, Carol Baker of Denison, brother-in-law, Leonard Klink and wife, Emma Lee of Denison, sister-in-law, Anna Dethmann of Denison, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, August 20, 2007, at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. David M. Sewing officiating. Music for the service was provided by soloist, Jim Ratzlof singing "The Lord?s Prayer" and "How Great Thou Art" and the congregation singing "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me". Karen Kahl served as organist. Pallbearers included Norman Johnston, Dean Johnston, Ryan Johnston, Gene Fineran, Allen Klink and Diane DeKok. Interment was at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Following the services the family invited everyone to return to the church and join them for fellowship and a meal prepared and served by Zion Evening Guild.
