Marjorie Emma Greer was born on April 4, 1926 to Thomas and Helena (Leinen) Schumacher in Defiance, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. She had perfect attendance the entire twelve years she spent at St. Paul’s Catholic School. After her graduation, she spent three months at Iowa State Teachers College in Missouri Valley, Iowa. She taught Kindergarten through eighth grades at Gurley 4 country school in rural Defiance for two years.
On January 2, 1947, Marjorie was united in marriage to Merle Greer. She enjoyed being a homemaker and mother to their ten children: Sharon “Shari”, Dennis, Kayleen “Kay”, Vicky, Donna, Peggy, Patty, Sandra, Dale, and Brian.
She enjoyed gardening, sewing, square dancing, baking, playing cards, scrapbooking, and putting puzzles together. Her greatest enjoyment was in being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
After Merle’s death in November of 1995, Marjorie continued living on her own until 1997 when she entered assisted care living. She was a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Community for the past eight years.
It was there that Marjorie died on Saturday, July 5, 2014, having attained the age of eighty-eight years, three months, and one day. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Merle, sisters: Hilda Kimmen, Viola Hoffmann, and Florence Schumacher; brothers: Charles, Vernon, and Melvin Schumacher, and son-in-law Robert Smith.
She is survived by her children: Shari McKeon Nash and her husband Doug Nash of Rutledge, Tennessee, Dennis Greer and his wife Nancy of Harlan, Iowa, Kay Smith of Hawarden, Iowa, Vicky and her husband Michael Blum of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Donna and her husband Bruce Bruck of Bloomington, Minnesota, Peggy and her husband Brian Merkle of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Patty and her husband Paul Steenhusen of Harlan, Iowa, Sandy Greer and her fiance Craig Clemons of Harlan, IA, Dale and her husband Doug Lonowski of Ellensburg, Washington, and Brian Greer and his wife Shelley of Boise, Idaho; thirty-four grandchildren; forty-five great-grandchildren; sisters: Mildred Hoffman of Panama, Iowa, Dorothy Hoffman of Bennington, Nebraska, and JoAnn and her husband Wilfred Weihs of Harlan, Iowa; other family members and friends.
