Marjorie Ann Hansen

Marjorie Ann Hansen, “Marge”,was born on June 24, 1929 in Monroe Township, Shelby County, Iowa to Martin and Elsie (Ericksen) Mortensen. She attended Center Township No. 4 until the sixth grade. Her family moved to a farm east of Harlan until her father died suddenly when Marge was ten years old. The family then moved to Harlan where her mother built a new house. She went to Laurel School in Harlan, graduating from Harlan High School with the Class of 1947. After graduation, she went to work for Dan Buckley, an attorney in Harlan, and after that as a secretary for Squealer Feed Company in Harlan.
Marge was united in marriage to Ralph Hansen on May 15, 1949 at Bethel Baptist Church and made their home on the Hansen family farm north of Walnut. Three children were born to this union: Bruce Alan on April 13, 1951, Steven Douglas on June 23, 1953, and Gail Patricia on August 6, 1954 and died on August 10, 1954.
After the boys were in school, Marge raised miniature schnauzer puppies for about twenty years. When the boys left home, she worked at The Loft Dress Shop in Harlan for ten years, retiring in June of 1979 due to failing health. Marge and Ralph lived on the family farm for forty-five years before moving to the Elm Crest Apartments in Harlan in August of 1994.
Marge died on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan at the age of eighty-six years, two months, and thirty days. She was preceded in death by daughter, Gail Patricia, her mother and father, Martin and Elsie Mortensen, sister and brother-in-law, Ila and Glade Custer, brother James Mortensen, nephews James Custer and Jim Mortensen, and nieces Sharon and Connie Custer.
She is survived by her husband of sixty-six years, Ralph Hansen of Harlan, Iowa; son Bruce Hansen and his wife Therese Park of Overland Park, Kansas, son Steve Hansen and his wife Marilyn of Urbandale, Iowa; grandsons Ethan and Zachary Hansen of Urbandale; sister-in-law Donna Mortensen of Medford, Oregon; niece Amy Mortensen; other family members and friends.
