Mark Steven Conrad was born on January 6, 1956 to Alvin and Delores (Bristol) Conrad in Shelby County, Iowa. He attended the Harlan Community Schools and graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1974.
He went to work for the Harlan Lumber Yard where he learned different aspects of carpentry. He became so good at building houses, cabinets, or anything that people wanted, that he decided to start his own construction business.
Mark also liked mechanics and owned an auto body shop before becoming disabled and not being able to work.
He was an avid reader and spent a lot of time at the Harlan Public Library. He loved history and was especially knowledgeable about the Civil War. He also loved conversation and would go in to the Harlan Hy-Vee every afternoon to chat.
Mark loved animals and took care of several neighborhood cats. He also enjoyed watching movies and Nascar races on television.
Mark died at his home in rural Harlan having attained the age of fifty-six years, two months, and thirty days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother David and sister Sue.
He is survived by his brother Randy Conrad and his wife Sandy of Harlan, Iowa, brother Delmar Conrad and his wife Janette of Fullerton, California, brother-in-law Ron Swain and his wife Marti of Excelsior, Minnesota, sister-in-law Nancy Conrad of San Marcos, California; nieces, nephews, and cousins, and friends.
Pastor Dan Hawn officiated the 11:00 AM graveside service on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
