Mark S. Grote
September 30, 1959 — April 17, 2011
Mark Steven Grote was born on September 30, 1959 in Harlan, Iowa, to Frederick and Loretta (Daeges) Grote. He was baptized, confirmed, and had his first communion at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. He attended school at St. Mary’s Catholic School before transferring to Harlan and graduating with the Class of 1978.
On November 20, 1982, he was united in marriage to Dianna Taylor at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. They had three daughters: Mandi, Becki, and Stephanie.
Mark liked working with his hands and repaired automobiles and could do any type of handy man jobs that came his way. He was fascinated by machinery even after getting his arm stuck in a combine. He was passionate about teaching his children how to do repairs and be self-sufficient. If anyone ever asked Mark to fix something, he was able to do it right away because he always had the right tool on hand.
He enjoyed recording and watching a broad range of movies, listening to his extensive music collection, and playing video games.
Mark made time to go for walks in the park with his daughter and was always there when you needed him. He loved animals, especially his ferret, rabbits, and dogs.
Mark was diagnosed in March of 2011 with pancreatic cancer and died on Sunday, April 17, 2011 having attained the age of fifty-one years, six months, and eighteen days. He was preceded in death by his daughter Stephanie, father Frederick, and brother Jerry.
He is survived by his daughters Mandi Taylor of Sac City, Iowa and Becki Smithh-Reisz of Atlantic, Iowa; mother Loretta Grote of Harlan, Iowa; sisters: Jeannie and her husband Daryl Jensen of Shelby, Iowa, Nancy and her husband Randy Palmer of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Connie McElderry and her fiancé R. B. Loomis of Omaha, Nebraska, and Mary and her husband Bud VanCamp of Harlan; brother Ronald Grote and his wife Kim of Washington, Iowa; sister-in-law Janis Grote of Harlan; close friend Kim Konecny of Harlan; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
Richard Jones officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were David Jensen and Jamie Grote. Inurnment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
