Mark John Gaul was born on September 6, 1954 to Roman and Mildred (Rau) Gaul in Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Mark attended St. Joseph's Catholic School and later graduated from Harlan Community High School with the Class of 1972. Mark was united in marriage to Patricia "Patti" Sanderson on October 25, 1997 in League City, Texas.

Mark was a world wide traveler who always loved coming home to the family farm in Iowa especially during St. Joseph's Parish Picnic or to help with harvest. He never missed his siblings birthdays and always called no matter where he was in the world. He was very dedicated to his job and was well respected and admired by his co-workers. Although he dealt with Parkinson's for many years, Mark never let it keep him from being independent and he was always "just swell". He loved chocolate and even ate his cereal with chocolate milk.
