Mark W. Miller
June 8, 1962 — August 6, 2009
Mark Wade Miller was born on June 8, 1962, in Greenfield, Iowa to Dale and Shirley (Stapleton) Miller. He was baptized and confirmed at Massena Methodist Church in Massena, Iowa and attended the AWANAS program at the Baptist Church. He attended Kindergarten through second grade at C & M Elementary Schools and completed his high school career at Bridgewater-Fontanelle Schools. He was active in football and track and set records. He attended SWCC studying in the Forrestry Department and became a licensed journeyman plumber. He was currently employed as a maintenance mechanic at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.
When he was younger, he did a lot of trapping and continued hunting and fishing as he grew older. He enjoyed the outdoors and nature and was a member of the Audubon County Conservation Club.
On August 31, 2006, Mark was united in marriage to Darla Hansen at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton, Iowa.
Darla and Mark enjoyed traveling, especially to places that they could be out in nature, such as the mountains in Colorado and Wyoming and the Canadian Rockies, but being with his family was most important to him. This spring, he had joined the Harlan Masonic Lodge, Parian Lodge No. 321 and has been a member of the Abu Bekr Shrine Center of Sioux City, Iowa. He collected antiques, Smokey the Bear memorabilia, and Roy Rogers items.
Mark loved his motorcycle but died as a result of a motorcycle accident on Thursday, August 6, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He had attained the age of forty-seven years and two months. He was preceded in death by his father.
Mark is survived by his wife Darla Miller of Elk Horn, Iowa; his daughter Messina Miller of Fontanelle, Iowa; his step-children: Monica, Jordan, Connor, and Brady Hansen all of Elk Horn; his mother Shirley Eshelman of Massena, Iowa; sisters: Judy and her friend Mark Gordon of Ames, Iowa, Dale and her husband Greg Dunlap of Cambridge, Iowa; brothers: Mike Miller and his wife Melinda of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Todd Eshelman and his wife Stefani of Roland, Iowa; parents-in-law G. Roger and Mardell Hansen; sisters-in-law: Lori Harris, Connie Steen and her friend Scott Marshall, and Judy and her husband Jerry Schrader; brothers-in-law: Ken Hansen and Jeff Hansen; step-brothers: Jerry Eshelman and his wife Vicki of Greenfield, Iowa, Steven Eshelman and his wife Cindy of Des Moines, Iowa, and Craig Eshelman and his wife Phyllis of Bridgewater, Iowa; step-sisters: Cindy and her husband John Schildberg of Greenfield, Iowa and Debbie Manning of Kansas City, Kansas; other family members; and many friends.
Pastor Ron Rassmussen officiated the 10:30 AM funeral on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church in Elk Horn, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Jordan Hansen, Connor Hansen, Monica Hansen, Brady Hansen, Messina Miller, Nik Jorgensen, and Erik Jorgensen. Serving as casket bearers were Todd Eshelman, Michael Miller, Mark Edwards, Troy Smith, Mitch Osborn, Brian O�Hern, Todd Thompson, Keith Henderson, Dave Clark, and Greg Dunlap. Interment was held at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Kimballton, Iowa.
