Marlene Ruth Crane Baughman was born at Council Bluffs, Iowa, January 12, 1938, the daughter of Everett and Bernice Algoe Crane. She was raised in the Vail area where she received her education graduating from the Vail High School with the class of 1956. She then furthered her education for one year at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. On September 22, 1957, Marlene was united in marriage with Harold Blair Baughman at the United Presbyterian Church, Vail, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two children, Susan and Tim. In the early years of their marriage they made their home in Denison, a farm near Denison and in the communities of Dow City, Gray, where Marlene was the Librarian, Minden, Vail, Kiron and Deloit. They moved to their present farm home in 1967 and purchased the farm in 1972. During the 1980’s Marlene worked for a time at Becky’s Hallmark in Denison and was a 4-H and Youth Program Assistant. It was also during the 80’s that Marlene resumed her college education receiving her B.A. Degree in Elementary Education from Buena Vista University. She then taught at the Denison 20th Street Elementary School for nine years from which she retired. Marlene was a person with many interests and hobbies including, sewing, painting, reading, gardening and canning the produce, traveling, especially to places of interest in Iowa and socializing with family and friends. Her happiest times were those spent with her children and grandchildren who will remember her as a loving mother and grandmother. She loved fixing their favorite meals and making Christmas so special each year. Marlene was active throughout her life in her church and community. She was a former member of the United Presbyterian Church in Vail and Denison where she was a Bible School and Sunday School teacher and was currently active in the Grace E Free Church in Denison. She was active in 4-H, traveling to Washington D.C. as a youth member and in later years as a chaperone when her son was a member and was a 4-H Leader for the Denison Diamonds and Good Handy Helpers Clubs. Marlene and Blair were greatly honored to be 4-H Hall of Fame Inductees in 2011. She was proud of her work in Eastern Star having achieved the office of Grand Ruth, was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and through the years was a member of various neighborhood clubs. Blair died September 16, 2011, and Marlene remained at their farm home. Marlene died Wednesday, September 26, 2012, at her farm home in rural Denison. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 74 years, 8 months and 14 days. Including her parents and husband, Marlene was also preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Leone Lange and two brothers-in-law, Bill Blair and John Allen. Those remaining to cherish her memory include two children and their spouses: Susan and Brock Hermann of Manchester, Iowa, and Tim and Alice Baughman of Denison, Iowa; three grandchildren: Aaron and Anna Baughman of Denison, Iowa, and Becca Hermann of Manchester, Iowa; sister: Nelda Blair of Vail, Iowa, three sisters-in-law: Donna Jean Allen of Blue Springs, Missouri, Doris and husband, Elmer Swift of Woodbine, Iowa, and Arloe and husband, Marvin Talcott of Independence, Missouri; two uncles: Dale Crane and Raynard Schmidt of Denison; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 1, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church, Denison, Iowa, with Pastor Brian Rihner officiating. Music for the service was provided by soloist Carrie Gunderson singing “Amazing Grace, My Chains Are Gone” and the congregation singing “This Is My Father’s World” and “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” with Nancy Bliesman serving as pianist. Those serving as honorary pallbearers included Elaine Chapman, Joyce Klein, Lynn Ross, Betty Meyer, Florence Poggensee, Sharon Lynch, Karen Christensen, Carol Borgstahl, Coletta Weeda, Mary Wadsworth, Jean Halbur, Opal Holdsworth, Debra Yankey, Sharon Reis and Beverly Eck. Pallbearers were Susan and Brock Hermann, Tim and Alice Baughman, Aaron Baughman, Anna Baughman and Becca Herman. Following the service the family invited everyone to join them in the church fellowship hall for a time of remembering and a luncheon prepared and served by the Grace E Free Church.
