Marlene Elsie Buthmann, daughter of Ernest and Lucille Kardell, was born September 12, 1939 in Harlan, Iowa. As the youngest of four children, they resided in the Avoca area until her seventh grade of school, when the family bought a farm near Audubon. She finished seventh and eighth grade in the one room school just a three quarter mile from her home. She graduated from Audubon High School with the class of 1957, then went to work in an insurance office in Omaha, Nebraska.
On October 7, 1960, Marlene married Merlin Buthmann and they moved to Harlan and this has been their home ever since. They had four children George William, Gary Dean, Marla Jean and Marcia Kay. Gary passed in a construction accident in 1987.
Marlene loved to cook and she cooked in many restaurants in Harlan, one being the 59er Steakhouse for many years until her health failed. She went to work for Western Engineering and was there for several years. She dearly loved her pie birds, her husband, children, and grandchildren and not necessarily in that order. Haha!
Marlene died on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, surrounded by her loving family at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, attaining the age of seventy-seven years, five months and nine days. Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her son Gary, siblings William Kardell, Marilyn Mikkelsen and Ben Kardell.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Merlin Buthmann of Harlan, Iowa; children George Buthmann and his wife Robin of Indianola, Iowa; Marla Rimington and her significant other John Hassell of Omaha, Nebraska; Marcia Buthmann of Harlan, Iowa; daughter-in-law Christine Crosby of San Angelo, Texas; five grandchildren, Kayla, Devin, Allyssa, Wesley, Gabe; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
