Marlyn Elizabeth Schmitz was born in Kiron, Iowa, January 6, 1922, the daughter of Raymond N. and Elizabeth Lundell Larson. She was raised there and was a graduate of the Kiron High School. On October 16, 1941, Marlyn was united in marriage with Vincent (Bud) Schmitz at Dakota City, Nebraska. Their union was blessed with two children, Larry and Patricia. They made their home in Cherokee, Iowa, until November of 1942 when Bud entered the service and Marlyn moved to her parents’ home in Kiron. Upon his discharge he returned to Kiron where he and Marlyn made their home and raised their family. Marlyn spent much of her life as a homemaker and in later years assisted her husband in the operation of Bud’s Tavern in Kiron. In her spare time she enjoyed socializing with family and friends, bird watching, doing crossword puzzles and watching television. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kiron. Bud died December 16, 1997, and Marlyn continued to make her home in Kiron. Since 2007 she had resided at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, and it was there her death occurred late Wednesday, May 18, 2011. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 89 years, 4 months and 12 days. Including her parents and husband, Marlyn was also preceded in death by two brothers: Allen and Bayard (Tony) Larson. Those remaining to cherish her memory include her children: Larry Schmitz of LeMars, Iowa, and Patricia Blunk and husband, Bill, of Kiron, Iowa, 6 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and one great great-grandson, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 23, 2011, at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison with the Rev. Christopher A. Maronde officiating. Music for the service was provided by Jane Gronau singing “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” and the congregation singing “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” and “On Eagles Wings” with Lois Gronau serving as organist. Following the service the family invited everyone to join them at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kiron for fellowship and a luncheon served by St. John’s Ladies Aid. After cremation rites were accorded a private family inurnment was held at the Kiron Cemetery in Kiron, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home,
