Martin “Marty” LeRoy Schuemann was born on December 15, 1941, as the only child to the parents of LeRoy Martin and Anita Louise Harder Schuemann in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He attended school at Avoca High School and graduated with the class of 1959. During his school years he enjoyed helping his dad farm, driving tractors, and being hired out to help neighbors put up hay.

Marty met JoAnn Woltmann at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca and became friends through Luther League meetings, parties, choir practices, and school events and activities. Both liked dancing and on Saturday nights, at the Avoca Ballroom, renewed their old friendship and started dating in 1961. They were united into marriage on September 22,1962, at Trinity Lutheran Church, and made their home on a farm northeast of Avoca, being crop farmers and raising livestock. They could always be found working outside, side-by-side together with farm work. From this union they raised two daughters: Connie and Lori. As a family they enjoyed their Saturday evenings polka dancing and going to stock car races in Harlan. Marty and Jo Ann also loved attending their daughters’ and grandchildren’s sporting events.

Farming was a major part of Marty’s life but he also worked in the trucking industry hauling grain and livestock for various companies. He farmed from 1962 until his retirement in 2006. Following retirement from farming, Marty drove as a courier for Midstates Bank until 2010.

In his spare time, Marty was interested in antique John Deere two cylinder tractors, collecting a few, and enjoyed tractor pulling as a hobby at the Iowa State Fair and around southwest Iowa. He belonged to the Corley Community Club, serving on the board for fifteen years; member and officer of Western Iowa Antique Tractor Pullers Association; and on the board of the State Antique Pullers group. Marty and Jo Ann loved to travel and visited all the United States except Maryland and Delaware.

Marty died at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa having attained the age of seventy-four years, ten months, and twenty-six days. He is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife Jo Ann Schuemann of Avoca; daughter Connie and her husband Greg Boysen of Harlan, Iowa; daughter Lori and her husband Tom Hackett of Oakland, Iowa; grandson Jared Boysen and his wife Shaleen of Hancock, Iowa and their children Jethro and Judah; grandson Alex Boysen and his girlfriend Kirsten Anderson of Avoca; granddaughter Kelsey Hackett and her boyfriend Devan Feigenbutz of Oakland and his daughter Kinsley; grandson Kyle Hackett and his girlfriend Jordyn Calhoon of Minden, Iowa; other family; and many friends.
