Marvin Guy Osborn was born on June 24, 1919 in Neola, Iowa to Roy and Ida (Schultz) Osborn. He was the youngest of four children. Marvin�s mother died when he was only six years old and upon earning his 8th grade education in Neola at age 13, he became a farmhand. He worked for the Denning family in Neola and helped his brother John farm land around the Avoca area.
He was drafted into the United States Army on September 21, 1941 and served in the European-African Middle Eastern Theater, Northern France and Rhineland, and also landed with other Armed Forces on Omaha Beach. He earned several medals including two Bronze Stars. He served his country until his honorable discharge on December 9, 1945 as a Special Forces Staff Sergeant. His discipline and patriotism he learned in the Army coupled with his strong work ethic derived from his love for farming are lasting legacies that he leaves with his loved ones.
Marvin�s love for farming lasted throughout his life, even after his retirement, he enjoyed reading farm magazines, such as Capper�s Weekly. He also worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 19 years. He loved reading the newspaper and watching Western movies on television.
Marvin moved to Mesa, Arizona to live with his son and family in 2005, and this is where he died on Friday, January 18, 2013 having attained the age of 93 years, 6 months, and 25 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Virginia, a granddaughter, Dr. Kristin E. Michael, two brothers, Fay and John, and a sister, Beatrice.
He is survived by his two children: Dennis Osborn and his wife Vicki, and Deborah Osborn, all of Mesa, Arizona; five grandchildren: Stacey Lynn Osborn, Stephaney and her husband John Bergant, Dan Michael and his wife Amber, Tony Michael and his wife Ashley, and Katie Gaiser; five great-grandchildren: Tucker, Evangelynn, Harper, Noah and Wren Michael; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Pastor Eric Meissner officiated the 2:00 PM funeral service on Friday, January 25, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were: Wayne Jacobsen, Frank Jones, Curtis Osborn, and Doug Alff. Military rites were conducted by the Fred Funston American Legion Post No. 227 at Graceland Cemetery in Avoca with Dan Michael, Tony Michael, Jack Osborn, Mitchell Osborn, Michael Jones, Richard Dennis, Gail Christensen, and Kevin Jacobsen serving as casket bearers.
