Mary Cecilia Paollazzi was born on April 25, 1926 to Louis and Rose (Zimmerman) Paollazzi in Westphalia, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia and graduated from St. Boniface Catholic School with the Class of 1944.
She trained to become a physical therapist and worked at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan for thirty years, retiring in 1992. In 2001, she moved to Portsmouth and lived there for five years. She moved to Persia to live with her niece Theresa in 2005 and lived there until 2007. She then became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Community.
Mary enjoyed bingo, playing cards at her card club, and board games and loved to watch the game shows on television. Her favorites were Wheel of Fortune, The Price is Right, and Jeopardy.
She also enjoyed sewing, making her own clothes, and would patch things for her nieces and nephews, visiting Tri-Center Schools every year for Thanksgiving dinner. A must for Mary was two or three times a week visiting the Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs.
Mary died at Elm Crest Retirement Community on Saturday, April 28, 2012, having attained the age of eighty-six years and three days. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Madonna Nowatzke.
Mary is survived by her nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.
Rev. John Dorton celebrated the 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at St. Mary�s Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Janet Wilwerding, Emily Nowatzke, Katelyn Kinney, Dawn Herweh, Linda Scott, and Becky Kinney. Serving as casket bearers were Roger Nowatzke, Dave Wilwerding, Raymond Nowatzke, Dan Nowatzke, Raymond Bruck, Randy Bruck, Kyle Scott, and Jeff Kinney. Interment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa.
