Mary Lou Emken was born on January 6, 1932 to William and Martha (Krueger) Deatherage at the family home in Hancock, Iowa. She graduated from Hancock High School.
She was united in marriage to Robert H. Emken on March 23, 1951 at the Methodist Church in Oakland, Iowa. The couple made their home in Hancock, Iowa and two children were born to this union: Steve and Dianne.
Mary Lou helped Robert with his fertilizer and grain business, Hancock Fertilizer Company. Mary Lou was a Bradford Exchange Dealer for over 25 years and her business was �Treasure Your Pleasures.� With this type of business, she was very organized and everything was labeled. She and Robert traveled to many flea markets to sell her items.
In their free time, she and Robert enjoyed family vacations at Spirit Lake and other lakes in the area during the summers. In January, she and Robert went on vacations to various places as well. Throughout their lifetime, the couple built two homes in Hancock and one in Avoca.
Mary Lou was a huge Chicago Bulls and Chicago Cubs fan. She loved watching NBA and major league baseball games, as well as the Game Show Network. She participated in ladies league bowling in Avoca on Monday nights for many years and was a member of the American Legion Auxillary.
Mary Lou died at the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center on Saturday, July 20, 2013 having attained the age of 81 years, 6 months and 14 days. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; and brothers, Donald and Robert.
She is survived by her son, Steve Emken of Hancock, Iowa; daughter Dianne Schueman of Spirit Lake, Iowa; granddaughter Lisa Emken of Carson, Iowa; great grandchildren: Isabelle and Jackson; other relatives and friends.
Jonathan Heifner officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Thursday, July 25, 2013 at Hancock United Methodist Church in Hancock, Iowa. Inurnment was held in Oak Hill Cemetery in Hancock
