Mary Agnes Goeser was born on February 15, 1932 to Arthur and Lillian (Engel) Goeser in Westphalia, Iowa. She was baptized at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia and confirmed at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, where she remained a lifelong member.
She attended grade school through sixth grade at St. Boniface Catholic School in Westphalia before completing her education in Harlan and graduating with the Class of 1950 from Harlan High School. She worked at Farm Bureau for a short time before going to Creighton School of Medicine in Omaha and working there as a secretary for the Dean of Medicine until 1972. She worked at the IRS in Omaha until 1982 when she came back to Harlan to care for her mother. In 1984, she began employment at CDS and stayed until her retirement in 1996.
Mary was a member of the Omaha Walking Club and liked to travel and hike. She did both out West and Hawaii. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society and a big fan of the Big Red and Coach Tom Osborn.
In March of 2010, she was admitted to Elm Crest Retirement Center which is where she died on Sunday, November 13, 2011, having attained the age of seventy-nine years, eight months, and twenty-nine days. She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her brother Don Goeser and his wife Mildred of Council Bluffs, Iowa; other family members and friends.
Rev. John Frost celebrated the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Musician Kate Kohorst accompanied vocalist John Rosman. Serving as casket bearers were Keith Engel, Myron Schaben, Douglas Engel, Dan Engel, Bruce Goeser, and Jack Larsen. Interment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa.
