Mary Dell Hayes
September 11, 1957 — November 29, 2021
Mary Dell Hayes, the daughter of Walter Howard Page and Peggy Frances Barnes, was born on September 11, 1957 in Omaha, Nebraska. She was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan and attended school at the Harlan Community Schools where she graduated with the class of 1976.
Mary and Dan wed in 1980 and were married for 25 years. Together they raised two children: Katherine and Charles. They worked together at the Red Lion. They also ran the Harmony bar and Saylor hotel. She also worked at the Evergreen, golf course and lastly as a supervisor at MCSI before a back injury left her unable to work.
Mary could get out any stain and she was a treasure trove of information. If she knew you, she knew you by licence plate number also and not that it mattered but she knew all the deputy names and badge numbers in Shelby County. She knew mostly all of the 10 codes and loved listening to the scanner before they went digital.
Mary loved being with her family and spent as much time as she could with her siblings, children and grandchildren. Nothing meant more in life to her than her family.
She died on November 29, 2021 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa having attained the age of sixty-four years, two months and eighteen days. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph and Harry Page.
Mary is survived by her children: Katherine “Katie” and her husband Darrin Jacobsen of Harlan and Charles “Chuck” Hayes and his significant other Mandy of Harlan; four grandchildren; four step grandchildren and one step great grandchild; her sister Frannie and her husband Dan Nissen of Elk Horn, Iowa; her brother Steve Page and his wife Barb of Manning, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
