Mary Ann Johnston was born on October 16, 1931 to Joseph and Pearl (Smith) Schmidt in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic church. She attended Roosevelt High School and graduated with the Class of 1949.
On October 27, 1949, she was united in marriage to Donald L. Johnston at St. Kevin�s Catholic Church in Minneapolis. Three children were born to this union: Tom, Kathy, and Richard.
Mary Ann worked as a secretary at a General Motors parts business as well as Unisys in Minneapolis for many years. She had also worked as a waitress and volunteered as a grandma for school children when they needed her. She especially enjoyed her own grandchildren: Lilli, Bella, Matt, Elizabeth, and Emma and her great-granddaughter Claire.
She lived in the Westridge Apartments in Harlan before being admitted to Elm Crest Retirement Community two weeks before her death on Thursday, May 19, 2011. She had attained the age of seventy-nine years, seven months, and three days. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Mary Ann is survived by her children: Tom Johnston of Omaha, Nebraska, Kathy and her husband Tom Tremmel of Harlan, Iowa, and Richard Johnston and his wife Christine of Clarinda, Iowa; five grandchildren: Lilli, Bella, Matt, Elizabeth and Emma; great-granddaughter Claire; brother Bob Schmidt and his wife Linda of Cross Lake, Minnesota; other family members and friends.
Rev. John Frost celebrated the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Michael�s Catholic Church on Monday, May 23, 2011. Serving as casket bearers were Rob Hall, Tom Ludwig, Tom Ouren, Dick Dotzler, John Helling, and Randy Greer. Inurnment was held at Assumption Cemetery in Richfield, Minnesota.
