Mary Jean Krummel

Mary Jean (Bornholdt) Krummel was born on September 11, 1927, in Avoca, Iowa, to Edwin and Amy (Orth) Bornholdt. She grew up and attended Fairview Country School until 8th grade and then graduated from Avoca High School. Mary Jean was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca and was a lifelong church member.
On July 11, 1944, Mary Jean was united in marriage to Roderick Krummel in Council Bluffs. To this union five children were born: Gary, Sally, Janice, Susan and Peggy.
Mary Jean was an avid bingo goer, rarely missing a Wednesday night to play bingo in Avoca; also enjoyed playing cards with her grandchildren. She enjoyed all holiday dinners and cooking for her family. Mary Jean loved to listen to Polka Music, tended to her large garden and looked forward to visits from her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She spent her working career as a nurse's aide at the Avoca Nursing Home for over twenty years.
On Friday, December 31, 2021, Mary Jean passed away at the Cass County Hospital having attained the age of ninety-four years, three months and nineteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Roderick; brother Donald; two sisters who died in infancy; one nephew Dennis Bornholdt; and sons-in-law Stan Matthies, Roger Hansen and Mark Wedemeyer.
Left to cherish her memory here on earth are her children Gary (Deanna) Krummel of Avoca, Iowa; Sally Matthies of Walnut, Iowa; Janice Hansen of Primghar, Iowa; Susan Wedemeyer of Atlantic, Iowa; Peggy Christensen of Sioux City, Iowa; twelve grandchildren: Christopher (Jenny) Krummel of Houston, Texas; Kimberly Behrendt of Boone, Iowa; Danny (Becky) Matthies of Ida Grove, Iowa; Shelia (Matt) Prokupek of Honey Creek; David Matthies of Sioux Center; Mitchel Hansen of Aledo, Texas; Lana (Greg) Kelsey of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Kara (Leland) Rainey of Urbandale, Iowa; Emily (Michael) Herzig of Iowa City, Iowa; Konrad (Tiffany) Christensen of Ankeny, Iowa; Sara (Andrew) Smith of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; Jennifer (Matt) Peterson of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota; twenty-four great-grandchildren: Shelby, Hadley, and Chester Krummel; Nicholas, Ashley and Cory Behrendt; Jacob (Sage) Matthies, Jordan, JoAnn; Samantha and Evan Prokupek; Bryce and Wyatt Hansen; Joel and Marisa Kelsey; Danielle and Tanner Rainey; Giovanna and Alexander Herzig; Kaden and Eli Christensen; Lilly and Cora Smith; Penelope, Beatrix and Park Peterson; sister-in-law Gilma Bornholdt of Solon Springs, Wisconsin; 1 niece and 2 nephews and other family and many friends.
