The bond between a mother and daughter is a bond that cannot be separated. Louise and Mary shared a bond like no other, from the time Louise gave birth to Mary, to the time God called them both home. Louise was born December 6, 1920 to Charles and Caroline (Petersen) Groth in Denison. She was a lifelong member of United Church of Christ in Schleswig. This church is where her and Walter Maack said their “I do’s” on January 8, 1941. Mary was born on May 31, 1941 in Denison and the bond was created.
Louise and Mary shared similar interests and qualities. Each one of them grew up on family farms and helped each other out like inseparable best friends. Louise milked the cows on the farm, and took care of the chickens, while Mary cleaned and prepared the house for another day. Louise was the outside body as Mary was an inside person. Being an indoor person led to Mary’s job as a housekeeper at Manilla Manor in Manilla, IA, a job she began years after her father Walter, passed away. Even though Mary loved being indoors, she did, however, love gardening. She spent many hours in the garden with Louise. Louise taught Mary multiple things like sewing which led to Mary’s love for embroidering and they both had a knack with their hands. Louise was good at quilting and Mary was excellent with embroidery, making pillows and embroidering designs on them.
If you didn’t know Louise and Mary, you could definitely tell they were a mother/daughter duo. Louise loved to play and watch card games. Mary was not as big of a fan of them, but she would hang around because she loved going places with her mom, the kitchen being the number one place you would see them both at. Louise was a phenomenal baker. She is known for her skill in making angel food cake, a trait she passed down to Mary because of the time they spent side by side. Mary was a very devoted and loyal daughter, as Louise was a loving and caring mother.
On Saturday, February 2, 2019, Louise passed away with Mary by her side after a long-fought battle with cancer attaining the age of 98 years, 1 month, and 27 days. On Monday, February 4, 2019, Mary was reunited with her mother, Louise, as God called her home after her battle with cancer, attaining the age of 77 years, 8 months, and 4 days. The two joined Walter Maack, Louise’s Husband and Mary’s father, in Heaven. They are survived by multiple nieces, nephews, and cousins. Louise and Mary will be missed dearly by all who knew them.
