Mary Jo Springman was born August 28, 1943 to Joe and Blanche (Lentsch) Frueh in Webster City, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in her family church in Barnum, Iowa. She graduated from Northwest Webster in Barnum, with the class of 1961.
In April of 1964, Mary Jo was married to Matthew Fitzgerald. They had two children Kenneth and Deborah. Matthew worked at IBP and the family moved to Denison in 1976. Matthew died in August of 1978 due to heart failure.
Mary Jo started working at City Hall in Denison in 1980 in the Parks and Recreational Office. She remained there for 28 years before retiring in 2008.
On February 24, 1995, Mary Jo was united in marriage to Donald Springman of Portsmouth, Iowa at St. Rose Lima Catholic Church in Denison. Mary gained 3 stepsons with her marriage to Don.
After retirement, she enjoyed reading books, playing games on her computer tablet, watching TV, taking walks and visiting with friends at Burger King in Harlan. She was an excellent cook and loved hosting her family and friends. Most of all, Mary Jo loved time spent with her children and grandchildren.
Mary Jo passed away surrounded by her loving family on Monday, June 18, 2018 at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, attaining the age of seventy-four years, nine months, and twenty-one days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Matthew Fitzgerald, and baby brother Urban Frueh.
She has left to cherish her memory, her husband Donald Springman of Harlan, Iowa; children Kenneth Fitzgerald and his wife Dawn of Indianola, Iowa; Deborah Fitzgerald of West Des Moines, Iowa; stepchildren Timothy Springman of Portsmouth, Iowa; Daniel Springman of Portsmouth, Iowa; Dennis “Pat” Springman and his wife Diane of Exeter, California; grandchildren Colin Fitzgerald of Indianola, Iowa; Samantha Springman of Harlan, Iowa; Jennifer Springman of Harlan, Iowa; brother Eugene Frueh and his significant other Christine Aultman of Barnum, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
