Mary "Do" Waltz, daughter of James and Adeline (Wilmes) Doyle, was born on April 4, 1926, in Neola, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick�s Catholic Church in Neola and graduated with the class of 1944 from St. Joseph�s High School in Neola.
After high school, Do entered the Sisters of Humility Convent at Ottumwa Heights in Ottumwa, Iowa, where she received her education in teaching. Do taught schools in Minnesota, Des Moines and Grinnell, Iowa. After receiving her Masters Degree, Do became the principal at Sacred Heart Catholic School in West Des Moines, Iowa. During the summers, Do would volunteer to teach under privileged children in distressed areas of Mississippi.
On June 4, 1976, Do was united in marriage to Vincent Joseph Waltz in Des Moines, Iowa. The couple made a home for several foster children including Chella Papish as well as Jeremy, John, and Jason Wyatt who lived with them from childhood. After their wedding, Do and Vincent continued to make their home at Rock Creek Lake before moving to Harlan.
Do and Vincent moved to the Elm Crest Assisted Living in Harlan in December 2005. After Vincent died on September 8, 2007, Do remained at Elm Crest Assisted Living but later moved to Elm Crest Retirement Community. It was there that she died on Saturday, October 17, 2009, having attained the age of eighty-three years, six months and thirteen days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vincent; her siblings: Bob, Catherine, Phil, Margaret, Joan, and Dick.
She is survived by her three foster sons: Jeremy Wyatt and John Wyatt both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Jason Wyatt of Panama, Iowa; her sister Mary Ellen (Bill) Hagedorn of Carmichael, California; seventeen nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at St. Mary�s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. Rev. John Dorton celebrated the 11:00 AM service and Rev. Bob Hoefler was the homilist. Interment was held at St. Mary�s Cemetery in Panama with John Wyatt, Jeremy Wyatt, Jason Wyatt, Josh Schmitz, Tom Crowley, and Matt Schmitz serving as casket bearers.
