Maude Marie Bauer was born on July 30, 1907, to William and Edna (McKeighan) Gardner in Burke, South Dakota. She attended grade school in Naper, Nebraska, and high school in Tennant, Iowa, before graduating from Amity High School in College Springs, Iowa.

She attended Wayne State Teachers College in Wayne, Nebraska. After graduation, she became superintendent of a two year high school in Nebraska. She then taught for three years at Exira, Iowa.

Maude met Albert Bauer in 1930 while buying a pair of shoes at the store. They were married one year later on July 8, 1931. This union was blessed with one son, Keith in 1937.

Maude continued to work as a substitute teacher and as a Sunday School teacher. She started selling shoes and keeping books at Bauer’s Shoe Store in 1931 and continued for over seventy years.

She was a member of Zenobia Rebekah Lodge No. 286 of Harlan and the Lebanon Chapter No. 8 Order of Eastern Star of Harlan. She was also active with the Weslyan Service Guild of the Methodist Church and served as Treasurer of the Harlan Chamber of Commerce in the 1970's.

Maude was admitted to Myrtue Medical Center on Thursday, March 13, 2008, and it was there that she died on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, having attained the age of one hundred years, seven months, and eighteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers: Samuel and Duane Gardner.

She is survived by her son Keith, nieces and nephews, other family members, and many friends.

Funeral Services were held Saturday, March 22, 2008 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home. Pastor Dave Swinton officiated the 11:00 AM service with burial at Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as honorary casket bearers were Austin Hess, Margaret Hatcher, Laura Arkfeld-Mohr, Shirley Tschirren, Carol Emlen, and Patricia Jorgenson. Active casket bearers were Roger Rust, Shawn McLaughling, Russ Becker, Bernard Cox, Sharon Mathiasen, and Jeremy Hess.
