Maurice Befort
February 18, 1944 — December 5, 2008
Maurice John Befort, the son of George and Luella Newell Befort, was born on February 18, 1944 in Rochester, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed in the catholic church. At the age of seven the family moved to San Diego, California where he attended Catholic School and graduated from Sweetwater High School. While in high school he helped his father in the construction business.
After graduation Maurice entered the United States Army on November 26, 1962 and served with intelligence in Germany. While in the military his father died so he returned to California to help run his fathers construction business. Maurice was united in marriage to Barbara Morris Becker on November 20, 1971 in Wabasha, Minnesota. Maurice drove for Onley Trucking and later went to work for the City of Avoca Water Department. He also drove a truck for Turner Furniture Company. He then worked for Finley Aggregate Company and Western Engineering until 2003 when he retired due to health reasons. He most recently assisted his wife in the operation of her tax business and managed the Atlantic office.
Maurice was an avid collector of Beer Steins, and even has one from Oktoberfest in Munich. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion of Avoca where he was past Commander and bingo chairman and most recently Maurice became a member of the Mt. Nebo Masonic Lodge. He was also a member and the current president of Iowa Hawkeye Mercedes Benz Club and recently drove in the Route 66 Fiftieth Anniversary Tour.
Maurice died on Friday, December 5, 2008 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska having attained the age of sixty four years, nine months and seventeen days. He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter Jennifer Lynn; brother Edward and sister Lavonne Schmidt.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; sons: Darren Becker and his wife Kaylee and Greg Becker and his wife Teri all of Avoca; Steve Becker and his wife Angela of Johnston, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Derek, Drew, Corey, Jordan, Taylor, Ciara and Jacob; brother Robert Befort and his wife Carlene of San Diego, California and Danny Befort and his wife Virginia of Shreveport, Louisiana; his sister Joyce and her husband Randy Growden of Rochester, Minnesota; sister-in-law Marsha Befort of Lake City, Minnesota; life long friend Hugh Copeland of San Diego, California; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at 9:00 AM at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa with Father John Frost and Pastor Nancy Ross-Hullinger as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were Corey Becker, Drew Becker, Ciara Becker, Hugh Copeland, Jordan Becker, Derek Becker, Taylor Becker and Jacob Becker. Interment was held in the Carson Cemetery, Carson, Iowa with Military Rites by the Fred Funston Post No. 227 of Avoca, Iowa.
