Maurice Adelbert "Delbert" Sjogren was born in Kiron, Iowa, April 2, 1916, the son of Swan Maurice and Emma Mathilda Miller Sjogren. He was raised at Kiron where he graduated from the Kiron High School. Following high school he was employed as a carpenter in the family business. During World War II, from April of 1942 until his discharge in January of 1946, Delbert served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army, serving in battles in Northern France and the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters. Upon his discharge, Delbert returned to Kiron where he began his 35 year banking career at Kiron State Bank serving in various positions, retiring in 1981. Following retirement he continued to serve as a director at the bank. Delbert spent his retirement years in Kiron where he was a lifelong active member of the community having served as Treasurer of the Community Club of Kiron, Board Member of K.E.L.M., a 40 year member of the Kiron Cemetery Board serving as secretary/treasurer and was financial officer and over 60 year member of the American Legion Post 383, Kiron, Iowa. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Kiron where he as baptized in 1926. He served his church through the years doing repair work, serving as a trustee, Sunday School Teacher and supplying flowers from his garden. In his spare time Delbert pursued his many hobbies including fishing, working in his workshop doing woodworking and rock polishing and collecting. He enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and in sharing flowers and garden produce with his church, family, friends and neighbors. In March of 2001, Delbert moved to the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center in Odebolt, Iowa, and it was there his death occurred Friday, July 24, 2009. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 93 years, 3 months and 22 days. Including his parents, Delbert was also preceded in death by one brother, Harold Clarion Sjogren. Those remaining to cherish his memory include one sister, Gloria Peterson of Odebolt, Iowa, two nieces, one nephew, Carol Schlappi of Kiron, Iowa, Janice Fryer of Ames, Iowa and John Peterson and wife, Linda, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, four great nephews, Kevin and Darin Schlappi and Matthew and Daniel Peterson, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 31, 2009, at First Baptist Church in Kiron with Pastor Nathan Witt officiating. Music for the service included Sarah Witt singing "Safe In The Arms of Jesus" and the congregation singing "When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder" and "How Great Thou Art" with Mrs. John W. Larson serving as pianist. Pallbearers included John Peterson, Kevin and Darin Schlappi, Daniel Peterson, Alan Gustafson, Rodger Larson. Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa and American Legion Post 383, Kiron, Iowa. Interment was at the Kiron Cemetery, Kiron, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home,
