Mavis Eileen Benson was born May 1, 1936, near Kiron, Iowa to parents Ed and Lilly (Pithan) Schultz. She was baptized on May 17, 1936, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa and confirmed April 2, 1950, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township. She attended Country Schools and graduated from Kiron High School in 1954. Mavis was married to Leonard Benson on June 5, 1960, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township by the Rev. L.S. Winter of Audubon, Iowa. They were blessed with two children, Curtis and an infant stillborn son. Mavis and Leonard lived their married life in Kiron, Iowa. For 7 years, until Curtis was born, Mavis was employed at Kollbaum Brothers Hardware and Machinery as a bookkeeper. She was also a news correspondent for the Denison Bulletin and Review, Odebolt Chronicle, and the Kiron Weekly News for 25 years. In 1977 she joined and was employed by the Denison Community School District at the Kiron and Denison sites for 27 years. It was also not unusual to see her working at the election polls, and she and Leonard helped with the stained glass at St. John’s Church. Mavis died early Wednesday morning, October 16, 2013, at the Denison Care Center in Denison. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 77 years, 5 months and 15 days. She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard, infant son, mother and father Lilly and Ed Schultz, brother Burdell, mother-in-law and father-in-law Jessie and Kermit Benson, and sister-in-law Lois Benson. Survivors include her son Curtis Benson and wife, Cindy of Omaha, Nebraska; two granddaughters: Erin and Ashley Benson of Omaha, Nebraska; one great granddaughter: Zoey Ray Fraasch of Omaha, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Charlyn Schultz of Denison; brother-in-law: Burdette Benson of Highland Ranch, Colorado, nieces and nephews: Karla Woolridge, Tom Schultz, Paula Bradley, Jackie Lawrence, Ted Schultz, Connie Tuebner and their spouses, other relatives and friends.
