Max L. Klindt, son of Carl and Stella (Lee) Klindt, was born February 12, 1929 north east of Avoca, Iowa. He was baptized and a life-long member of the Altamont Baptist Church in rural Harlan. He attended grade school at Fairview Township #6 and high school until the 11th grade in Harlan, Iowa. Max started his farming career north of Avoca in 1950.
On February 4, 1950, Max was united in marriage to Phyllis Schroder at her parent’s house in rural Avoca. To this union, four daughters were born: Virginia, Charlene, Marjorie and Bernitta. Max and Phyllis met at a basketball game in Avoca and their first date was watching a movie at the Legion Hall. They bought a farm west of Avoca in 1962 and moved there in 1963. That was their home for nearly 10 years before moving in March of 1973 to their current farm. Max and Phyllis took several farm tours, traveled through forty-eight states and seven different countries. They also took many tours and traveled with the Neihart family. For many years, Max was one of the trustee's for the Knox Township. He was also a very active member in the church; holding the offices of trustee, deacon, usher, and mowing the grounds.
Max enjoyed going to farm sales with his brothers and throughout his farming career, Max has owned fifty-two John Deere tractors. He loved his family unconditionally; even on his final days, you’d catch him teasing and scaring his grandchildren. Four daughters did not deter Max from teaching them farming activities. As his children grew older, he taught them how to feed chickens, hogs and cattle, grind feed, clean the hog house and floors (even when they chose to do it barefoot), plow fields, make hay, walk beans and watch grain into the elevator at harvest time. Max was very devoted to his family and he had strong faith in the Lord.
Max died at Avoca Specialty Care Center on Thursday, May 24, 2018, having attained the age of eighty-nine years, three months, and twelve days. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Phyllis, brothers Lee and David Klindt, sister Muriel Mclntosh, brother-in-laws Lenard and Gorden Schroder, sister-in-law Annabel Schroder, and grandson Jeremiah Ruffcorn.
