Maxine Jungen was born in Checotah, Oklahoma, November 4, 1921, the daughter of Luckey and Bertha Morse Cook. She was raised in Oklahoma where she received her education graduating from the Onapa High School. Following high school she moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma where she resided until moving to California. On October 23, 1948, Maxine was united in marriage with William Jungen at Santa Monica, California. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Jeanne and Nancy. They lived in California for a short time before moving to Mapleton, Iowa, and then to the farm near Ute. In 1973 they moved into Ute where Maxine was employed at a local café. William died March 4, 1977, and Maxine continued to reside and work in Ute. In 1984 Maxine moved to Denison, Iowa where she was a caretaker for Margaret Riggleman and later was employed as a file clerk at Denison Job Corps for ten years, retiring at age 79. Maxine spent her retirement years in Denison where she greatly enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Hobbies that occupied her time through the years include sewing, crossword puzzles and yard work, including raking leaves. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, St. Rose Ladies Guild, St. Mary’s Ladies Guild and Lucky 13 Club while residing in Ute, and bowling league. Maxine died at her home in Denison, Saturday, May 11, 2013 surrounded by her loving family. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 91 years, 6 months and 7 days. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, Luckey and Bertha Cook, her husband, William Jungen and one brother, James Cook. Those remaining to cherish her memory include her two daughters and husbands: Jeanne and Philip Freshwater of Elk Grove, California, and Nancy and Don Healy of Vail, Iowa; four grandchildren: Brian Healy of Denison, Iowa, Lisa Madison and husband Eddie of Des Moines, Iowa, Kristin and husband Ryland McIntosh of Altamont, Missouri, and Ryan Healy of Vail, Iowa; one great grandson, Grey Madison of Des Moines, Iowa; one brother, Kenneth Cook and his wife, Faye of Henrietta, Oklahoma; sister-in-law Verniece Cook of Checotah, Oklahoma, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Denison, Iowa, with Father Paul Kelly as Celebrant. Others participating in the mass included Servers: Ellie Magnuson and Angel Sanchez; Lector: Ryan Healy; Gift Bearers: Jeanne Freshwater and Nancy Healy; and Eucharistic Minister: Robert Healy. Music for the mass was provided by St. Rose of Lima Adult Choir singing “I Call You To My Father’s House”, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”, “You Are Mine” and “How Great Thou Art” with Jean Cornelius as accompanist. Pallbearers included Brian Healy, Lisa Madison, Kristin McIntosh and Ryan Healy. Interment was at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Mapleton, Iowa. Immediately following the mass the family invited everyone to join them in the Parish Center for a fellowship and a luncheon prepared and served by St. Rose of Lima Ladies Guild.
