Maxine Magill was born on a farm in Milford Township, Vail, Iowa, January 31, 1920, the daughter of Ralph and Lillian Osterlund Pieper. She was raised on the farm and graduated from the Vail High School with the class of 1936. On May 18, 1941, Maxine was united in marriage with Edwin John Magill at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail, Iowa. Their union was blessed with four sons: Marty, Gary, Gene and Tim. They made their home on the farm in Milford Township until moving to Vail in 1982. Through the years, in addition to being a busy farmwife and mother, Maxine was employed as a Nurse’s Aide at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Editor of the Vail Observer, and from 1968 until retiring in 1991 she was secretary at the Ar-We-Va Elementary School in Vail. She enjoyed her memberships in the United Presbyterian Church in Vail, Sweet Adeline’s in Denison, and serving as a volunteer reader at the Ar-We-Va Elementary School. Maxine was happiest when spending time with her children and grandchildren and attending their activities. Her leisure hours were spent baking, reading, playing euchre and square dancing. Eddie died July 20, 2001 and Maxine remained in Vail until moving to Denison in 2004. Since November of 2009 she had resided at the Denison Care Center in Denison. Maxine died Saturday morning, September 18, 2010, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 90 years, 7 months and 17 days. Including her parents and husband, Maxine was also preceded in death by three infant sisters and four brothers: Ralph, Roy, Charles and Lloyd Pieper. Those remaining to cherish her memory include four sons: Marty Magill and wife, LaJune of Perry, Iowa; Gary Magill and wife, Rhonda of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Gene Magill of Taiwan; and Tim Magill and wife, Kay of Denison, Iowa; 7 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; one sister: Norma and husband, Paul Bjorkgren of Manning, Iowa, four sisters-in-law: Verna Pieper of Denison, Iowa; Esther Pieper of Vail, Iowa; Barb Magill of Charter Oak, Iowa; and Barbara Pieper of Chico, California; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail, Iowa, with the Rev. Richard Francis officiating. Music for the service included soloist Allison Magill singing “Amazing Grace”, soloist Glenn Freese singing “I Love You Truly”, soloist Joe Pieper singing “Once In A Very Blue Moon” and the congregation singing “In The Garden”. Ruth Noelck served as organist. A reading written by Tonya Magill was rendered by Joyce VonGlan followed by a recorded selection of “Beautiful Lady In Blue” Pallbearers included William Magill, Larry Pieper, Jerry Pieper, Richard Pieper, Keith Bjorkgren and Brad Bjorkgren. Interment was at the Vail Cemetery, Vail, Iowa. Following the services all were invited to return to the church for fellowship and a luncheon served by the United Presbyterian Women.
