Maxine Mary Schwery, daughter of Raymond and Sidonia (Schmitz) Book, was born January 21, 1934 in Harlan, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan and attended Harlan High School, where she graduated with the class of 1952. After graduation, she worked at Wigness Implement in Harlan, Iowa as a bookkeeper.
On January 21, 1956, Maxine was united in marriage to George Schwery at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. After their marriage, Maxine helped George on their family farm outside of Panama, where they also raised nine children: Nick, Paula, Phil, Dennis, Ann, Dean, Carol, Janet and Julie. In 1996, George and Maxine retired from the farm and moved to town.
Maxine enjoyed helping on the farm and was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. She was active at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama serving on the Parish Council, ladies guild, religious education teacher and on St. Mary’s Catholic School Board. Maxine was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Panama and liked search a word puzzles, gardening, drinking Diet Coke, playing solitaire and other card games with family members and the ladies of Panama.
Maxine died on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 surrounded by her loving family at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, attaining the age of eighty-five years and nine days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Emelie.
She is survived by her husband of sixty-three years George Schwery of Panama, Iowa; children Nick Schwery of Panama; Paula Wallace of Omaha, Nebraska; Phil Schwery and his wife Marilyn of Panama; Dennis Schwery and his wife Susie of Panama; Ann and her husband Dave Hodapp of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Dean Schwery of Hickory, North Carolina; Carol Schwery of Harlan, Iowa; Janet and her husband Tom Lefeber of Portsmouth, Iowa and Julie and her husband Steve Determan of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; brother Ray Book and his wife Maxine of Harlan; brothers-in-law Bob Koster of Gretna, Nebraska; Ralph Schwery of Panama; sisters-in-law Lu Schwery of Harlan; Donna Schwery of Panama; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
