Mayme W. Rasmussen Profile Photo
Mayme W. Rasmussen was born on April 2, 1918, three miles west of Kimballton, Iowa, to Peter A. and Ella (Nielsen) Petersen. At the age of eight years old, following the death of her father and after their house burned, she and her mother moved in with her sister Ruth near Harlan, Iowa. She attended school in the Harlan Community School district and graduated with the class of 1935.

On December 22, 1936, Mayme married Holgar Eijler Rasmussen. To this union a son was born and they named him, Gaylord. Mayme and Holgar lived their lives in Shelby County and lived on four different farms until retiring in 1990.

Mayme took pride in being a farm wife and also working as a cook at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, and then Petersen’s Grocery store in Elk Horn. After moving to Harlan, it was not uncommon to find Mayme sitting on the front porch and talking with neighbors.

In January 2013, Mayme moved to Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan and died on June 29, 2017, having attained ninety-nine years, two months, and twenty-seven days. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Holgar on February 25, 1994; sisters Viola Groves, Ruth Andersen, Anna Andersen, Cecilia Knudsen; and brothers Alvin Petersen, Lake Petersen, Chris Petersen, and Roy Petersen.

Mayme is survived by her son Gaylord Rasmussen and his wife Carolyn of Belton, Missouri; grandchildren Jill and her husband Brad Wilhite of Frisco, Texas; Tracy and her husband Tim Bradford of Southlake, Texas; Eric Rasmussen and his wife Jennifer of Crystal Lake, Illinois; great-grandchildren Kyle Wilhite; Rachel Rasmussen; Alicia Rasmussen; Erica Bradford; sister-in-law Alyce Rasmussen; nieces and nephews; and many friends.
