Mervin Rudoph Schnack, son of Ernest Gustav and Bertha Ann (Kay) Schnack, was born on December 22, 1919, near Logan, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed At Shelby Lutheran Church. He attended school at Tennant, Iowa and graduated with the class of 1937.
On June 17, 1945, Mervin was united in marriage to Mildred Doonan at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. After their marriage, they farmed in Shelby County throughout the years. He was a past member of the Tennant School Board. His family and farm were his life. Hearing his children play and laugh made his day when they were young. Mervin had a great sense of humor and always went out of his way to say something cute to make you laugh.
Mervin enjoyed and took great pride in his farm, home, and cars. He kept them spotless at all times. Through the years, Mervin and Mildred followed their children�s school and sporting events. They were also active in the Immanuel Lutheran Church where they were longtime members.
Mervin retired from farming in 1993 and moved to Harlan. While in Harlan, he was active with the Senior Citizen�s Center as well as with the Meals on Wheels program. Mildred died on November 18, 1994, and after her death Mervin remained at home in Harlan. He later moved to the Elm Crest Assisted Living Apartments and this has been his home since.
He died at his apartment in Harlan on February 8, 2007, having attained the age of eighty-seven years, one month and seventeen days. In addition to his parents and wife, Mervin was preceded in death by his brothers Arnold, Elmer and his sister, Theresa Davis.
He is survived by his son Gary Schnack and his wife, Kate of Council Bluffs, Iowa; his daughter, Sheryl and her husband Kevin Humlicek of Lincoln, Nebraska; his grandsons, Brandon and Nathan Humlicek of Lincoln; his sister Wilma and her husband Edwin Olson and his brother Ernie Schnack and his wife RoseAnn both of Harlan; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Monday, February 12, 2007, with Pastor Steve Chellew and Pastor Heather Ploen both presiding over the 10:30 AM ceremony at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. Honorary casket bearers were Bud Hansen, Keith "Max" Goodner, Russell Haas, Bill Shannon, Willard Olson, Harold Peters, David Gibson, Merle Lawyer, LeRoy Cooper, Jim Boardman, Junior Block, Jess Boardman, and Vern Renze. Serving as casket bearers were Allan Olson, Randy Schnack, Ernie Peters, Dale Klindt, Galen Schnack, Merle Larson, and Wayne Olson. Interment was at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
