Michael Albert Assmann was born September 19, 1928, at the family farm in Panama, Iowa, the son of Anton and Catherine (Huebert) Assmann. He was baptized in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama. He grew up attending country school and then later attending the Catholic School in Panama, graduating with the Class of 1946. After graduation, he answered the call to serve his country during the Korean Conflict in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in July of 1956. On September 6, 1954, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Thraen at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. To this union, nine children were born, Helen, Linda, Thomas, Susan, William, Carol, Jane, Robert, and Keith.
Mike and Mary Ann made their home in Earling on their farm. Mike was a master of many trades, farming, milking cows, raising livestock, welding, gardening and raising their nine children. They farrowed pigs, and the children remember scooping out barns on more than one occasion! Once in a while, as a punishment, you may have to clean the chicken coop. He enjoyed tending the soil and harvesting the produce of their large family garden. Mike also enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing, and bowling when time allowed. His devout faith in his creator God and savior Jesus Christ began at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and school in Panama, Iowa and he continued his celebration at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa and St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. He was a member of the American Legion in Earling for many years. In 2007, Mike and Mary Ann sold their farm and moved to Harlan where they lived. In 2016, they moved to Clarinda to be near their daughter Susan.

Mike was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and steward of the land.
The family will cherish the memories of his silly jokes and stories,
evening ice cream comes served with a table knife,
cracking walnuts, and playing with baby pigs.
May he be at peace in God’s loving care.
