Michael Bruce Coenen
November 2, 1954 — February 20, 2018
Michael Bruce Coenen, son of Joseph Hofer and Marie Ann (Leuschen) Coenen, was born November 2, 1954 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He grew up on his family's farm outside Defiance, Iowa where he was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Catholic Church and attended at St. Paul's Catholic School. He then went on to attend high school at the Irwin-Kirkman High School graduating with the class of 1972. After high school, Michael returned to the family farm where he worked with his father.
On September 11, 1982, Michael was united in marriage to Sharon Buman at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance. After their marriage, they made their home near Defiance and raised two girls.
Michael enjoyed being outdoors and took great pride in taking care of his yard and playing golf but his true love was his family, especially his girls, Heather and Catie - also known as Punky and Maynard. Even being on the road a lot, he made it home as much as he could for the holidays and other special events for his girls. Dancing was a passion passed down from Marie to all her children, and thusly Michael passed it down to his girls. He never missed a moment to sweep them off their feet and twirl them around the dance floor. The proudest moments in his life were the days he walked them down the aisle for their weddings and holding his grandbaby Hadley. Hadley held a special place in Michael's heart. Papa was his newest and favorite role to play, and he played it with pride.
Michael was also an avid sports fan with his favorite teams being the Green Bay Packers and the Iowa Hawkeyes, unless the Hawkeyes were playing the Iowa State Cyclones. He loved all the team gear his girls got him and always wore them with pride.
Michael died on February 20, 2018 in Manning, Iowa having attained the age of sixty-three years, three months and eighteen days. In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his sister Jane Erlbacher.
He is survived by his wife Sharon Coenen of Defiance, Iowa; his daughters: Heather and her husband Heath Boeke of Amana, Iowa and Catie and her husband Jordan Rieckenberg of Waverly, Iowa; his granddaughter Hadley Boecke; his brothers: Russ Coenen and his wife Marilyn of The Woodlands, Texas, Rick Coenen and his wife Patty of Omaha, Nebraska, and Jack Coenen of Hudson, Ohio; his brother-in-law Ron Erlbacher of Omaha; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
A 1:00 PM memorial service was celebrated by Rev. Davis Smith S.J. on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan. Inurnment will take place at a later date.
