Michael James Young was born on September 27, 1951 to Melvin �Jim� and Alice (Jordan) Young in Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized at Ross United Brethren and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Harlan, where he remained a lifelong member of the congregation.
Michael was educated at home by an intercom system hooked up to the Harlan High School. His friends would �fight� over who got to carry the intercom to the next class. He lived in Harlan his entire life.
He was a huge fan of NASCAR racing, specifically Jeff Gordon and his number 24 car. He would go to the Shelby County Speedway every chance he got to watch the local races.
Michael enjoyed putting together model cars but not quite as much as he liked the pretty calendar girls!
Michael died at his home on Monday, March 11, 2013 having attained the age of sixty-one years, five months, and twelve days. He was preceded in death by his father, Jim, and his brother, Jeff.
He is survived by his mother Alice Young and his sister Patrice and her husband Timothy Turner all of Harlan, Iowa; aunt, uncles, nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Pastor Darwin Moore officiated the 11:00 AM memorial service on Friday, March 15, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church in Harlan, Iowa. Music was provided by Steve Lawson and Sharon Donlin. Serving as honorary casket bearers were Bruce Christensen, Timothy Turner, Steve Christensen, Brian Jones, Greg Roecker, and Bruce Jones. Inurnment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
