Michel Carter

Michel Charles Carter, son of Charles William”Bill” Wall and Ruby Kathryn Michel, was born August 12, 1959 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Michel was adopted by Virgil Carter at the age of three when he married his mother, Ruby. He was baptized at the Christian Church in Woodbine, Iowa and confirmed at the Irwin Methodist Church in Irwin, Iowa. Mike attended grade school in Irwin and graduated from Irwin-Kirkman High School with the class of 1978.
After high school, Mike went on to Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, receiving his associates degree in Ag Business. While there, he met Carol Schaben and they later married on March 28, 1981 at the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. They became parents to three children Leah, Ryan and Dena. He farmed with his brother and father, outside of Irwin, where they raised their children. When his son Ryan became old enough he also joined to work beside Michel on the family farm. In 1996, Mike became an EMT and paramedic, and worked for Medivac in Harlan, Iowa and volunteered on the Irwin Rescue Squad and Irwin Fire Department for several years.
After his divorce from Carol in 2008, Mike was later united in marriage to Tami Martin in August of 2009. They enjoyed camping, riding motorcycles and spending time with friends. They later divorced and Mike continued to reside at his home west of Hamlin, Iowa.
Mike enjoyed woodworking, taking family trips to the lake at Table Rock where he loved to boat. He also loved watching his kids participate in activities and play the piano. He was a smart, strong willed perfectionist and could fix anything. The happiest you would find Mike was when he was in the field planting and harvesting his fields of gold.
Michel died at the Audubon County Hospital in Audubon, Iowa on January 26, 2017, attaining the age of fifty-seven years, five months and fourteen days. He was preceded in death by his daughter Dena Carter; sister Kathryn Pennell and father Virgil Carter.
He is survived by his children Leah and her husband Justin Washburn of Urbandale, Iowa; Ryan Carter of Irwin, Iowa; grandchildren: Sophia Hansen, and Evelyn and Nolan Washburn; mother Ruby Carter of Irwin; brother William Carter and his wife Kathleen of Irwin; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
