Mildred “Mick” Frances Arkfeld was born on February 7, 1923 to Anthony “Tony” and Katherine “Katie” (Loehr) Schmitz in Westphalia, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia where she also attended school and graduated with the Class of 1941.
On August 26, 1943, she was united in marriage to Clement Arkfeld in Westphalia. They became parents to ten children: Janet, Ed, Diane, Richard, Lou, Gene, Brian, Vivian, Jayme, and Sandy. They were members at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama.
Together with her husband, they ran a successful business - Arkfeld Plumbing and Well Digging. She liked to travel and visited forty-eight of the United States. She enjoyed going to visit her children and friends, playing bingo, Scrabble, and cards, especially bridge.
She was creative and enjoyed embroidery, crocheting, and quilting. Praying and saying the rosary were daily habits. Mick was an active member of her community and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Katherine, #266 of Earling, Iowa, Panama Senior Citizens, and the Panama Sewing Circle. She also served on St. Mary’s Parish Council and the Altar Society.
After her husband’s death in 2006, Mick continued living in her home until August of 2014 when she moved to Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan. She died on Sunday, March 22, 2015 having attained the age of ninety-two years, one month, and fifteen days. She was preceded in death by her husband Clem; grandson Keith Kwapiszeski; her parents; brothers: Francis, Tony, William, and Edmund Schmitz; and sisters: Delphine Schmitz, Valeria Ebert, Josephine Nichols, Sylvia Weiland, Coletta Hamilton, and Jeanette (Rasmussen) Kriegel.
She is survived by her children: Janet (Ralph) Kwapiszeski of Sun City West, Arizona, Ed (Shirley) Arkfeld of Omaha, Nebraska, Diane (Al) Vandenberg of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Richard (Mary Kay) Arkfeld of Panama, Iowa, Lou (Bill) Dewhurst of Scottsdale, Arizona, Gene (Mary Ann) Arkfeld of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Brian (Mary) Arkfeld of Westphalia, Iowa, Vivian (Mike) Cairney of Earlville, Iowa, Jayme (Shirley) Arkfeld of Panama, Iowa, and Sandy Thompson (Mark Mesa) of Chandler, Arizona; thirty-two grandchildren; forty-eight great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law George Arkfeld of Oceanside, California and Jerry Bissen of Earling, Iowa; other family members and friends.
