Mildred Jean (Scheef) Glenn, daughter of John and Hulda (Leebeck) Scheef, was born July 4, 1927 nine miles north of Walnut on the family farm. She went to country school until 3rd grade, and her mother said she wanted her children to go get a high school education, so the family moved to Walnut into the old McAvoy house. Mildred graduated high school in 1946, then went to Iowa Beauty School in Des Moines. After graduating, she started her career in a beauty shop in Winterset, Iowa. Mildred opened her own beauty shop in Walnut in 1948, her first shop was behind the grocery store, and second shop in the front of the masonic lodge building on the north side. The third beauty shop, located downtown was her last location until she retired in 2002.
Mildred met Pat Glenn in 1978 when he came and repaired her freezer. Mildred and Pat were married in June 1980 and then started Pat's Walnut Inn in 1980. They owned the bar until 1990. Mildred was in many organizations Questers, Walnut Legion Auxiliary, Council Bluffs Archery Club, and the Walnut Historical Society. Some of the things she enjoyed over the years was archery, stamp collecting, coin collecting, reading, knitting, quilting, and spending time with her friends at the tavern.
Mildred died Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, attaining the age of 90 years, 3 months, and 10 days. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by husband, Louis “Pat” Glenn; and siblings John Scheef Jr, Gilbert Scheef, and Merna Whyle.
Mildred is survived by her children Jerry (Cindy) Glenn of Walnut, IA; Joel Glenn of Tacoma, WA; Jacqueline (Don) Cocklin of Carthage, TX; grandchildren Daniel “DJ,” Christopher, Jamie, Halee, Katie, Jill, Paul; 16 great-grandchildren; nephews, nieces, many other relatives and friends.
