Mildred Susan Hoffmann, daughter of Thomas and Lena (Leinen) Schumacher, was born on June 27, 1913 near Portsmouth, Iowa. She was baptized at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and attended school at St. Mary’s Catholic School. While she was in school, Mildred’s father died and she quit school to help at home with her mother’s wall paper business. Mildred also worked as a housekeeper and cook for the Fred Louis family in Harlan and at Lake Okoboji.



Mildred was united in marriage to Edward A. Hoffmann on January 21, 1941 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. She met Edward at one of the many dances they attended at St. Peter’s Hall in Defiance and ten children were born to this union. Shortly after their marriage, Mildred and Edward made their home on a farm outside of Panama where they farmed until their retirement in 1977. In 1979, they moved off the family farm and made their home in Panama.



She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama where she was a member of the Altar Society and active with St. Mary’s School and served on the Parish Council. In addition to helping on the farm, Mildred was a loving mother who raised her children instilling in them the importance of working hard. She also enjoyed quilting, sewing, cards, gardening, puzzles and crossword puzzles and fishing with Ed and the Kwapiszeski’s.



Mildred died at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan on May 22, 2015 having attained the age of one hundred and one years, ten months and twenty-five days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband who died on June 6, 1998 and her brothers and sisters: Hilda Kimmen, Florence Schumacher, Viola Hoffmann, Vernon Schumacher, Dorothy Hoffmann, Melvin Schumacher, Charles Schumacher and Marjorie Greer.



She is survived by her children: Thomas Hoffmann of Austin, Texas; Joseph Hoffmann of Panama, Iowa; Fr. Lawrence “Larry” Hoffmann of Ankeny, Iowa; Carol and her husband Norris Hoover of Gretna, Nebraska; Connie and her husband Alan Zimmerman of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Anita Buckley of Earling, Iowa; Anthony Hoffmann and his wife Paulette of Audubon, Iowa; Mary and her husband Marc Mauseth of Tubac, Arizona; Ann and her husband Michael Lewitke of Mora, New Mexico and Daniel Hoffmann and his wife Sheila of Omaha, Nebraska; 17 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; her sister JoAnn and her husband Wilfred Weihs of Harlan; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
