Mildred Josephine “Millie” was born on September 2, 1924, to Melchior and Theresa (Klein) Schwery at their family farm near Panama, Iowa. She received the sacraments and was a lifelong member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama. She graduated from St. Mary High School where she played girls’ basketball and lettered as a guard.
On December 28, 1944, Millie was united in Holy Matrimony to William B. Leuschen. She embraced her life as a farmer’s wife and a devoted mother to her fourteen children. She loved cooking, baking, gardening, sewing and crocheting, and most importantly, spending time with family and friends.
In 2013, Millie was the recipient of the Harrison County Conservation Award for farm owners. She was a member of the Commander’s Club, the ladies local Hemlock Club, and in the past five years, was the proud matriarch of the Leuschen family barn dances. Millie stayed at the farm until she moved to Woodbine in 2010, and then to Fox Run Assisted Living in Council Bluffs in January of 2014.
Millie attained eternal life on Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at the family farm, surrounded by her loved ones. She had attained the age of ninety years, six months, and thirty days and was preceded in death by her parents, husband William in 1995, daughter Marla in 1966, son Michael in 1978, two grandchildren Matthew Hilger and Carrie Leuschen-Rowden; and brothers and sisters: Afred Schwery, Margaret Coenen, Viola Leinen, Magdelena Hodapp, Lavern Schwery, Verena Maiwald, Zita Engel, and her twin brother Melvin Schwery.
She is survived by her children: Ronald and Evelyn of Antioch, California, Dennis and Liz of Rolla, Missouri, William and Linda of Silvis, Illinois, Suella and Dean Hager of Shawnee, Kansas, Patricia and John Hruska of Omaha, Nebraska, Paul and Michelle of Storm Lake, Iowa, Bruce and Kelly of Mustang, Oklahoma, Faye and Richard French of Randolph, Iowa, Annette and Peter Dunlop of Woodbine, Iowa, Carol and Mike Robertson of La Vista, Nebraska, Bennett and Lana of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Betty and Cary Saar of Treynor, Iowa; forty-six grandchildren; seventy-nine great-grandchildren; sisters: Nonna Adams of Santa Cruz, California, Theresa Wellman of Neola, Iowa, and Cleo Nelson of Mercer Island, Washington; and many family members and friends.
