Monna Jeanette Juhl was born on September 18th, 1935 to Henry and Clarice (Weimer) Peterson, in Harlan, Iowa. Monna grew up on the family farm, and graduated from Harlan High School.
Monna met the love of her life, James Juhl, in 1954. The two dated for a year before being married at the Harlan Lutheran Church on August 28th, 1955. Jim and Monna have two sons: Jeff and Jerry. They raised their family west of Tennant before buying the family farm outside of Persia in 1966. Monna was a working farm wife with Jim, while raising the two boys. While living on the farm Monna enjoyed tending to her garden, canning, and especially baking. In December of 1978, Monna made her first wedding cake for her son Jeff's wedding. It was then that Monna turned her passion and love for baking into a career. She was well known for her 30 year career of baking wedding, birthday, and graduation cakes. Monna also was well known for making her Danish wedding cakes.
Monna has been a member of the Shelby United Lutheran Church for the past 50 years. She enjoyed being an active church member, serving for luncheons and participating in the annual aebleskivers dinner. Monna was also proud to have been a member of the Shelby Women's Auxiliary Legion for the past 40 years. Her and Jim enjoyed golfing and traveling with friends in their RV. They looked forward to traveling each year to Corpus Cristi, Texas where they resided and wintered for six months of the year. Monna's biggest enjoyment in life was her grandkids. She treasured them, teaching them how to bake her famous cakes, helping them with 4H projects, and making quilts for each one of them for highschool graduation.
