Muriel Lucille (Thomsen-Muller) Bacon, was born in Kimballton, IA on December 7, 1918. She was one of 11 children born to the late Nettie (Jorgensen) and Thomas Baltzer Thomsen. Muriel was baptized, confirmed and married in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton, and was the Salutatorian of her class in Elk Horn, in 1936. Muriel married her first husband, the late Ove O. Muller, on June 1, 1939 and they spent 28 wonderful years together.
She led a life of strong Christian faith and was active in the First UMC in Harlan. Muriel was gifted with a beautiful singing voice which she used to grace those around her from a small child with her sisters to church choir as an adult. She generously donated her time and resources, al-ways willing to help and take responsibilities without accolades. She re-ceived recognition at FUMC for her volunteer work and positions, having had been an active member for 70 plus years.
Muriel was an avid sports fan, especially golfing, baseball, and bas-ketball. Muriel was a talented golfer having won nine golf championships including a hole-in-one at the Harlan Golf and Country Club where at 99 years of age she was the oldest living member. Muriel loved her Yankees and spent many fun weekends watching them at the Royals stadium. She also enjoyed following the NBA and her San Antonio Spurs.
Muriel worked for Dr. K. Morgan Edwards, minister of the Methodist Church in Glendale, CA as the receptionist at the switchboard of the church from 1948 to 1950. Muriel was also a Deputy Juvenile Probation Officer where she served several Iowa counties in that position for 11 years from 1969 to 1980.
Family was the most important thing to her all of her life. She was ex-tremely proud of her Danish heritage and rich family history and stayed involved in preserving those memories and artifacts.
Muriel and her second husband, the late Max E. Bacon, were mar-ried on September 14, 1974. They moved to their condo at HG&CC. She often opened her home to family and friends. She was a wonderful homemaker and cook and everyone remembers her baking her delicious Spritz cookies and “Peppernuts”.
Muriel was a loving and devoted woman. She will be remembered for her many wonderful aspects of her personality and life, especially her smile, laugh and gentle, calm and kind manner. Her children will always be grateful to God for their amazing, loving mother and all these bless-ings that she was to them.
Muriel faced death with faith, courage, grace and dignity in the same way she lived her life. She passed peacefully on December 31, 2017 at Elm Crest Retirement Community, Harlan, IA where she received exem-plary care, in the beginning of the 100th year of her life, with family by her side and with the blessed assurance that her last breath here would be her entry into her eternal home in Heaven with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and loved ones who went before.
Preceding her in death were her parents; nine siblings: “Little Goldie” Thomsen, Golda Callin, Edna Powell, Marjorie Price (her twin), Bernice Garber, Hans, Bruce, Thomas (“Tommy”) and Burdette (“Bear” and also “Tommy”) Thomsen; her husband of 28 years Ove O. Muller (1967) and husband of 35 years Max E. Bacon (2010).
