Myrtle Louise Bauer was born on March 14, 1926 in Westby, North Dakota to Rev. Alfred and Marie (Johnson) Andersen. She was baptized in Dane Valley, Montana, and confirmed in Minden, Nebraska. She attended Country School in McCabe, Montana, and graduated from high school in Minden, Nebraska. She moved to Avoca, Iowa, in the early 1940's with her parents.
It was there that she met Leonard Bauer and on February 1, 1948, they were united in marriage at the English Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Two sons were born to this union: Jim and Dave.
Myrtle worked at Iowa Power and Light, was a housewife and then was employed by the Avoca school system for twenty years in the school cafeteria. She retired in 1985. She was very involved in several church groups and enjoyed travel. They visited Nebraska, South Dakota, Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, New England, the West Coast, East Coast, Alaska and Hawaii.
Myrtle became a resident of Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in November of 2005 and it was there that she died on Friday, March 27, 2009, having attained the age of eighty-three years and thirteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers: Arnold, Milton, Maynard, and Vernon, and her sister Lucille Olsen.
Myrtle is survived by her husband of sixty-one years Leonard Bauer of Avoca, Iowa; her sons: Jim Bauer and his wife Mary of Billings, Montana and Dave Bauer and his wife Lorrie of Meridian, Idaho; seven grandchildren; her brother Wesley Andersen of Minden, Nebraska; sister Ruby Lindstrom of Minneapolis, Minnesota; many nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 with Wayne Paulsen officiating the 10:30 AM service at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Hillari Bauer, Nickolas Bauer, Christopher Bauer, Sloan Bauer, Travis Bauer, Chase Bauer, and Jennifer and Tyler Mahan. Interment was held at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota.
