Myrtle Marie Campbell, daughter of Niels and Martina Hansen was born on January 6, 1918, on the family farm near Audubon, Iowa. She attended country school near Audubon through the eighth grade.
After school, Myrtle moved to Harlan and became a nanny for several Harlan families. On January 16, 1937, Myrtle was united in marriage to Edmund F. Campbell at the Bethel Baptist Parsonage in Harlan. Two children were born to this union: Merle and Edna Jean. Myrtle and Ed owned a hay bailing operation until 1946 when they moved to Jacksonville, Iowa and Ed began working for Peterson Brothers Trucking.
After Ed’s death, Myrtle remained in Jacksonville until May 2006 when she became a resident at Elm Crest Assisted Living in Harlan.
Myrtle died on Friday, January 23, 2009, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, having attained the age of ninety-one years and seventeen days. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ed, her brothers Orville and Einar.
She is survived by her children Merle Campbell and his wife Sheryl of Irwin, Iowa; Edna Jean and her husband Tom Vacanti of Council Bluffs, Iowa; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; her sister Esther Atkinson of Des Moines, Iowa; her brother Virgil Hansen of San Gabriel, California; nieces; nephews; other family members and friends.
Funeral Services were held on Monday, January 26, 2009, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Pastor Ron Rasmussen officiated the 1:00 PM service. Interment was held at the Jacksonville Cemetery in Jacksonville, Iowa with Butch Greer, Lance Campbell, Jacob Hurd, Corey Campbell, and Lonnie Campbell serving as casket bearers
