Neil J. Monahan
March 16, 1938 — July 10, 2008
Neil John Monahan, son of Cyril and Armella (Gubbels) Monahan, was born on March 16, 1938 in Portsmouth, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth and graduated from St. Mary�s High School in 1956.
Neil joined the United States Army National Guard on March 21, 1959 and was honorably discharged on September 20, 1959. He continued to serve his country with the United States National Guard Reserves until December 2, 1964.
On October 22, 1960, Neil was united in marriage to Delores Kurtenback at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Three children were born to this union: Catherine, Cindy, and Michael.
Neil was a longtime member of St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth and served on the parish council. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Msgr. Joseph Sondag Council No. 12193 of Portsmouth.
Neil was co-owner of Monahan Bros. Oil Company in Portsmouth with his brother Kenneth.
Neil died on Thursday, July 10, 2008, at his home in Portsmouth having attained the age of seventy years, three months, and twenty-four days. He is preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Catherine.
He is survived by his wife Delores of Portsmouth; their children: Cindy and her husband Gary Thielfoldt of Omaha, Nebraska; Mike Monahan and his wife Linda of Harlan, Iowa; three grandchildren: Sara and her husband Justin Knoble; Nicole Campbell all of Omaha; and Brittany Monahan of Harlan; one great-grandson Ptolemy Knoble of Omaha; his brother Kenneth Monahan and his wife Phyllis of Harlan; his aunt Roseann and her husband Francis Cahill of Omaha; and his stepmother Marie Monahan of Earling, Iowa; other family members and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, July 14, 2008 with Rev. Paul Monahan as celebrant and Rev. John Dorton concelebrant of the 10:30 AM service at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Larry Weihs, Dick McLaughlin, Bob Wood, Ron Kleffman, Steve Lowery, and Gerald Schiltz. Serving as casket bearers were Jeff Monahan, Justin Monahan, Lon Monahan, Justin Knoble, Dean Monahan, and Tom Monahan. Interment was held at St. Mary�s Cemetery in Portsmouth, Iowa.
